Financial, Economic and Accounting Data Resources

A variety of data resources are housed in the McCombs School of Business. Organized by type, a brief description of each is provided below along with a note on accessibility.  A location key follows the descriptions.    

Accounting Data:

            Compustat3 - Accounting data for North American firms

                        Available to: McCombs faculty and PhD students.

 

            Worldscope1 - Accounting data for international firms

                        Available to:  Finance faculty and PhD students.

 

Asset Allocation:

Morningstar EnCorr Ibbotson2 - Tools to research, create, analyze, and implement optimal asset allocation strategies within a single platform.

Available to:  McCombs School students.

 

Bank Loans:

DealScan1 - Data on firm bank loans.

            Available to:  Finance faculty and PhD students.

 

Corporate Actions:

SDC Platinum - Merger, IPOs, Secondary offerings, etc. for US and International securities.  See McCombs website for access. (http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/fac-res/resources/sdc_faq.asp)

 

Derivatives:

Bloomberg Professional1,2 - Real-time financial market data, news, price quotes including derivatives and many other types of data.

            Available to:  McCombs School students and faculty.

 

Earnings forecasts/announcements:

IBES3 - Earnings announcement dates, results, and analyst forecasts for US and international firms.

            Available to:  McCombs faculty and PhD students.

 

Holdings Data:

FactSet Lionshares1 - Portfolio holdings data for international mutual funds and institutions.  It is an international version of the Thomson products below.

            Available to:  Finance faculty and PhD students.

           

Thompson 13f Institutional Holdings3 - Portfolio holdings for US Institutions (e.g., Legg Mason, Fidelity, Bank of America, AIG, etc.).  Example data is quarterly reports of Legg Mason’s holdings aggregated over all its mutual funds and subsidiaries.  Note that for mutual fund companies, you only observe the holdings of the fund company, such as Legg Mason, not the funds, such as Legg Mason Value Trust.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

 

Thompson CDA/Spectrum s123 - Portfolio holdings data for US Mutual funds (e.g., Legg Mason Value Trust, Legg Mason Opportunity Trust, etc.).  Example data is quarterly reports of the Legg Mason Value Trust’s portfolio (i.e., stocks held, number of shares held in each stock, etc.)

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

 

 

Market Analytics and Research:

Bloomberg Professional1,2 -Real-time financial market data, news, price quotes.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and students.

 

FactSet1,2 - Company Analytics; Market and Economic Analytics; Real-Time Analytics; Portfolio Analytics; Quantitative Analytics; Fixed Income Analytics; Application Development.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and students.

 

Capital IQ2 - Capital IQ is a web and Excel-based research platform that combines information on companies, markets, and people worldwide with tools for fundamental analysis, financial modeling, market analysis, screening, targeting, and relationship and workflow management.(Note: The Excel plug-in is available on the computers in EDS Center classroom)

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and students.

 

Mutual Fund Misc:

CRSP Mutual Fund Performance3 - Monthly performance figures for US mutual funds. Also includes data on fund characteristics (e.g., age, % cash, etc.).

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

 

MFLinks3 - Provides mapping between Thomson holdings IDs and CRSP Mutual Fund Performance IDs.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

 

Real Estate:

Argus Valuation2 - Commercial real estate cash flow projection, transaction analysis and asset valuation solution.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and students.

 

Stock Prices:

CRSP3 - US stock price data.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

 

DataStream3 - International stock price data.

            Available to:  McCombs School faculty and PhD students.

3Wharton Research Data Service(WRDS):  The McCombs School of Business subscribes to the Wharton Research Data Service (WRDS), an Internet-based business data service that allows faculty and students to access and analyze a variety of popular financial data sources for academic research, including Compustat, CRSP, IBES, and TAQ.
